Project Spotlight: Stockbridge Technology Centre (STC)
We built a state-of-the-art commercial scale vertical farm for the research and technology transfer centre at Stockbridge in Yorkshire. The unit is a 4 multilevel ebb and flood system in two rooms giving a total of over 200m2 of growing area.
The entire system is operated by the very latest Priva environmental computer with a multitude of sensors mapping and controlling the whole system. As well as this, the system has a fully recirculating two tank hydroponic feed and irrigation unit.
Project Spotlight: Liberty Produce
We designed and built a three-container growing unit, specifically for research and trials. The state-of-the-art growing facility contains three individual growing systems:
- Ebb and Flood
- Deep water
This project is clear evidence of our wealth of systems experience!
Creating farms for the future
Our vertical farming units are designed and built in our NEW HQ in Yorkshire. Our in-house design and engineering team work closely with growers to design the farm and size out irrigation, HVAC, hydroponic systems, lighting, and controls.
Our grower's perfect vertical farming solution is then installed by us. Plus, we provide important post-installation training.

Project Spotlight: Ikea’s Space10 innovation lab
GrowStack worked alongside IKEA's innovation lab SPACE10 to create a pop-up farm to grow tiny greens that were used to prepare 2,000 nutritional salads for London Design Festival.
These crops were grown hydroponically in six of our GrowStack systems, meaning they were set into water filled with nutrients, rather than soil, fitted with Valoya L28 AP673L spectrum for vegetative growth overhead.
This project showcases how our system can help grow tasty, nutritious, and local food that is much more accessible and affordable for communities.

Forget everything you were taught in biology – plants actually don't need sunlight to grow.
Vertical farmers typically opt for LED tubes to illuminate their crops as these can be placed close to the canopy, produce optimal light intensity and minimal heat.
Our Valoya LED tubes help increase floor space and production as they are designed to be stacked close to the crops, 25cm away, if not closer, to allow you to vertically stack your product and LED lighting system. Meaning spaces such as car parks and warehouses are all commercially viable spaces.
Each LED chip inside the tube contains the entire light spectrum meaning there is absolute light uniformity at all distances of the luminaire and the plant, enabling uniform growth of plants at all stages including the most delicate one, seedling.

Let us explain what a Hydroponic growing system is...
Hydroponics is growing produce without the need for soil. Plants are placed in a growing medium and nutrients are provided directly to the roots through water, rather than being absorbed out of the soil.
Each variable is closely controlled in hydroponic farming – resulting in healthier produce and enabling you to produce much greater yields.
Another great benefit is the intensity at which some crops can grow in hydroponics. The plants don’t need to grow huge root systems to get the nutrients they need so they can focus on growing their big juicy fruits or leafy greens, which means they can grow a lot faster than normal. If you combine this with LED light you can reduce the time it takes to grow crops by up to a third! This method is especially effective with leafy green plants like lettuce or basil.
Using our system you can grow: Spinach, kale, mint, tomatoes, strawberries and much more…
GrowStack are experts in building vertical farms. Work with our team today to build the farms of the future.
We work with some of the best horticultural brands in the market…Valoya
Meet one of our partners – Valoya.

Hidden 33 meters below the streets of Clapham in a former air-raid shelter you will find Growing Underground!
The system was built to a bespoke specification to fit the tunnels where height and width restrictions were some of the many challenges. Valoya LED tubes were used to increase floor space and production as the LEDs allow the bench systems to be designed close together.
Today, their produce is used by top chefs and can be found in many major supermarkets, such as Waitrose and M&S. Produce ranges from radish, garlic chives, fennel to pea shoots, rocket, wasabi mustard, and red basil
Due to a controlled environment, each tiny leaf tastes as amazing as the last. The greens are unaffected by the weather and seasonal changes, and thanks to their prime location it drastically reduces the food miles for retailers and consumers.
Farms are growing beneath our cities and towns.
Indoor farms growing fruits and vegetables in these space-efficient, climate-controlled environments have started popping up all over the world from Japan to London.
But in already over-developed cities, where can you put a farm? It can feel like there is nowhere left to build. But there is a lot of room in cities if you know where to look.
GrowStack built a bespoke system for GROWING UNDERGROUND LTD which is hidden 33 metres below London the farm utilises abandoned air-raid shelters that were built in world war two.
One of the tunnels hosts trays of sprouting herbs utilising 550sqm of the air raid tunnels to produce about 20,000kg of greens every year!
There is plenty of space in our cities for farms – we just need to think differently…

The FFH enables the development of next-generation food production technologies and knowledge sharing that will reduce barriers to adoption whilst working towards a sustainable and productive, net-zero emissions future.
Winter outside, harvest-season inside with Shipping Containers
Shipping Containers re-purposed for mini farms or grow rooms are secure, moveable and most importantly not affected by the weather or pests, with the added bonus that this ultimately reduces food mileage.
GrowStack’s shipping container farms can have 1 – 5 tiers of growing medium which is fed by an enclosed water system and nutrient tank. Also included is a climate control system, LED grow lighting and pH dosing systems along with monitoring systems that can be checked remotely.
If you want to set up your own farm inside a used shipping container, we’ve got you covered.
Stockbridge Technology Centre (STC) is raising the roof to light up the future
STC has opened a state of the art research facility to examine the effects of different LED lights on fresh produce and long season crops.
The multi-tier unit is an Ebb & Flood system with GE balanced LED’s for optimum plant growth.
Spanning across two rooms the vertical farming system provides 200m2 of growing area, providing a springboard to closed cultivation and city farming by allowing growers to test crops and ideas before embarking on large scale investments and builds.
